Don't Quote Me

To the artist there is never anything ugly in nature.
-Auguste Rodin

Take a moment to take in the words of famous sculptor, Auguste Rodin. But to truly understand this quote you must break this ten word phrase up into three parts.

1) [To the artist]
This phrase makes everyone equal as it calls for the imagination of the reader. Imagination, regardless of the person's background, is infinite; it's something that can make something into nothing while still being nothing. An artist is one who expresses his or her emotions and experiences through various mediums as sought fit. Emotions can be unique to each person in this universe. Even though you've either said or heard the words "I know how you feel", it would be impossible to actually have the same feelings as the other person. With this line, we enter the "imagination's" mind.

2) [there is never anything]
This phrase, at a glance, means that nothing is present, but look a little closer and you'll see there is much more than a mere nothing. Take this line with a little bit of the last analysis with the idea of eternity and infinity. When there is never anything, there never was, never is, and never will be.

3) [ugly in nature]
This phrase is almost an oxymoron. How can nature be ugly? It was given to us to enjoy and embrace the beauty of the place we call home. The only way nature is ugly is when you see the human impact on it. We make the beautiful into something ugly just to create something temporarily. The ugliness in nature is not evident, meaning it's not there. It never was. It never will be for all eternity.

So put it together: [in the open mind of a person who wants to express himself or herself] [exists no trace of existence] [of bad in a good world]

From another mind comes these quotes, but take it upon yourself to figure out what it really means. Who knows what you'll find...

Heritage High School Feeds Frisco

On October 8th, 2013, my mom received an email from a friend that Frisco Family services is dangerously low on food and desperately needs donations of 60,000 lbs. of food to feed the needy in the area. That evening during dinner time, my mom shared this news with me. As a family, I knew we would donate some food to the FFS but I realized that we could make a bigger impact if we could spread the word and reach out to more people for donations. It was one of the best dinner table conversations we ever had as a family because at the end of dinner, I knew I had to do something. I decided to approach my school and explore the idea of a food drive with them.

I met with my Assistant Principal and some other teachers and before I knew it, Heritage Philanthropy Club (HPC), the Muslim Student Association (MSA), and Daughters of our Living Lord and Savior (DOLLS) were all excited about this project and eager to help.

We decided to hold a competition between the 2A classes. The class with the maximum items donated would win but didn’t reveal what the winning class would receive as a prize. At Heritage High School, every individual, whether they are a student, or a teacher, lives by a code called Coyote CLASS. CLASS stands for for Character, Leadership, Accountability, Scholarship, and Service to others. We hoped the students would use this as an opportunity to show their service to others.

The classes were rated on a point system per item. The items most needed by Frisco Family services were worth two points, while all other items were worth a point. Each Friday, the items collected were tallied up, points were awarded, and the officers of the organizing clubs took the items to the front of the school to set up a display. Students saw this display grow larger and larger as the weeks went on, and gained a deep sense of pride in themselves and their school.

To keep the momentum going, we promoted the food drive during the school news broadcast every morning. During lunch, we had a "food drive representative" to remind the students of the event. We used rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos) that we learnt in the classrooms whenever possible. We pulled out statistics from Frisco Family Services about the projected number of families that would be  struggling to have food on their tables in the upcoming holiday season, we drew of the word "philanthropy" to spark curiosity in our efforts, and raised awareness among the students that there are people right here in Frisco who needed their help. We instilled in the students, a desire to help others in a degree that Heritage hadn't seen before.

We had great participation in the first week itself. Some classes brought in, a humble 5-10 cans, while other classes knocked it out of the park by bringing cartloads of food. At that time, we decided to divulge the prize for the contest winners – FREE breakfast for the winning class.

A little incentive gave another boost to the food drive. Each class was attempting to outdo each other in bringing in food items. On the side, we contacted local stores and very excited when two local Kroger stores agreed to match our collection up to $250. Whole Foods went another step ahead and matched penny for penny.

On the last day of the food drive, we had the front hallway of the school filled with food collected by the students. A Penske truck had been hired to take the food from the school to Frisco Family Services. All of the organizing groups come together one last time to load the food (yes, we had two truckloads of food!!!) into the truck.

I am proud to say that Heritage students and staff contributed a total of 2,601 items weighing 2,678 lbs. That’s enough food to feed 27 families and fill a 16-foot truck twice! Special recognition to Ms. Biggerstaff’s class, who contributed 1,215 of the 2,601 items

I could hardly believe that a simple email and a dinner time conversation could lead to such an experience of a lifetime. I am certain that all of us who were involved in this cause were profoundly impacted and will continue to serve in the community in one way or the other. To me personally, it was another step in my journey to helping others. The most satisfying part about this event was that it was initiated, planned, and executed by the students with help from the faculty and administration.I was super thrilled at the volume of donations we received and felt a little lighter that at least some of the local families wouldn't go to bed hungry during the holiday season.

Productivity: It helps me Sleep?

We all need sleep. Some get the average 8+ hours a day, while some rarely get to meet this friendly beast.

This evening, I was in the car with my mom driving home from school. We were talking about my "unfulfilled" sleep schedule. She said that the reason I don't get enough sleep is I don't get enough sleep.

Let me explain the craziness she had just uttered: When you work on something and you go to sleep later than you normally do, you will wake up at the same time you normally do (say 7:00), but you'll be more tired. This is because you slept less. Now for the rest of the day, you are less awake than you were the previous day. Since you are more tired, your brain cannot function as well as it could if it was well-rested, so it takes longer to do certain assignments that were assigned today. Instead of it taking an hour to finish your chemistry homework, it now takes you 1 hour 15 minutes. And sadly enough, this cuts into you sleep again. You go to sleep 15 minutes later and wake up at 7:00; you wake up even more tired and your brain can't function as well because it is so tired. Now the work for chemistry that normally takes you one hour takes you 1.5 hours. And that, unfortunately, cuts into your precious sleep. And this cycle continues until we get a day of rest where we go to sleep early and wake up late preparing us for the cycle that will come in just a few days.

We take many things for granted in our lives, but one thing should never be sleep. We need it too much. So what can we do? We can focus. Plan our work and manage our time, so certain tasks take an allotted amount of time-no more, no less. We get our work done on time, we get to bed on time, we wake up on time, so we're more awake than ever, to do it all over again.

My "PAVE" Road: From A Student To A Teacher

PAVE stands for Philanthropy and Volunteerism in Entrepreneurship. The program was founded by Bob Hopkins and teaches kids the basics of philanthropy, communication and presentation skills, and what it takes to be a leader. I had my first taste of the PAVE program way back in 2007 when I was in the 4th grade. Through PAVE, I learnt about philanthropy and how vital our small helpful acts are to the society. It was my first major fundraising experience. Our class got to pick a non-profit organization of our choice (we picked Texas Scottish Rite Hospital) and raise money to help kids needing special treatment of an orthopedic condition.

Now fast forward to June 2013. Mr. Hopkins calls me and asks if I would like to get involved with PAVE but this time as an instructor! I thought “How cool is that!” I was being asked if I could change the lives of kids through a program which had changed mine. Over the course of the next few weeks, Allison Johnson, an experienced PAVE instructor, and I planned out a “Summer” PAVE program for kids in the Collin County area.

The sessions were held at the Frisco Public Library. We had a bunch of super motivated kids from 6-12 years of age. Session one involved teaching the kids the meaning of philanthropy and how we can incorporate it in our everyday lives. Session two was about goals – setting and following through with them.  During session three, we taught the students about entrepreneurship and how to approach and fix a problem through creative ideas and a plan of action. In the fourth session, the kids learned about many non-profit organizations, their mission statements, logos and famous philanthropists and their work in the community. Throughout the four weeks, students learned the importance of good communication skills, poise and posture, and techniques to make a great first impression. We ended the PAVE Summer program with a bang – An Award Ceremony to recognize the students who worked hard to learn about philanthropy, volunteerism and entrepreneurship and pledged to make a difference in their community through acts of kindness.

It was an incredible experience for me when I was in 4th grade, and now, even more so. I loved teaching the kids how to be a philanthropist and be a great leader.

I think the kids walked away with a better understanding of how little acts can make a big impact. I hope that PAVE kindled a desire in them to do something for their community and some day one or more of these kids will take the flame forward as a teacher of the PAVE program.                                                            -Amit

June 6th Happened. It's up for you to decide whether it was good or bad

Every day is different. But one thing is common: every day has its ups and downs.  June 6th is a prime example. June 6th is a day that celebrates a lot of different things, but also mourns some tragedies. We celebrate freedom, entertainment, sports, and video games through events like D-Day, the opening of the first drive-in theater, the establishment of the NBA, and the release of TETRIS. However, we mourn the Great Seattle Fire, and the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Today is a day that should never be forgotten because of its impact in the United States, and maybe even the world...

Some things weren't so great.
On June 6, 1889, A fire had broken out in downtown Seattle, Washington. The fire had spread across 25 blocks, and had killed one young boy. The city had chosen to rebuild the central business district instead of relocating. The damage caused by the fire cost $20,000,000 which is now worth $673,000,000.

On June 6, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy, brother of John F. Kennedy, had died as a result of gunshot wounds received the day before by Sirhan Sirhan. Kennedy was celebrating his victory in the primaries for California and South Dakota, and was shaking a busboy's hand when he was shot in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

But days aren't always always about the negative. Sometimes they are about the positive things that happen for example:

On June 6, 1933, the first drive-in theater was opened in Camden, NJ. Drive-in theaters are something we all enjoy going to. Even if the movie isn't good, it's the experience of being with family or friends in a car and watching something together. These theaters grew in popularity in the '50s and '60s but became less and less popular over time with land values and rent prices. Now it's really hard to find drive-in theaters in big cities, but if you do, go and enjoy yourself.

On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces, during World War II, had stormed the beaches of Normandy, France and surprised the German armies allowing us to win this battle. This battle was essential as it had given the Allies the upper hand, leading to them liberate Paris and the rest of France from Axis control. Diversions were set up to mislead the German armies into thinking a landing was to happen further north of Normandy. With the Germans distracted, air strikes, followed by charging infantry prevented France from being fully under Axis control.

On June 6, 1946, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is established. For all my basketball fans, we know that Canada first created basketball when James Naismith came up with the idea in 1891. It wasn't until 55 years later that the Basketball Association of America was created and rivaled the National Basketball League. They eventually merged and held seasonal games that continued until the present day. With the national championships coming around soon, we can all sit back and think about how long this league has stayed strong in the USA.

On June 6, 1984, a game we all know and love as Tetris was released by Soviet programmer Alexey Pjitnov. The game is a tile-matching game that is one of the most globally known video games. The game can be found on almost every platform and can be played by people of all ages. Tetris can improve cognitive skills while serving the entertainment necessary in everyone's lives. Game Informer Magazine gave it the title of #3 best game of all time saying "If a game could be considered ageless, it's Tetris"

So everything has positives and negatives. But it is up to you to decide whether to focus on the good or the bad. Make the most of every day, and try to always stay on the bright side.

Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance

Freedom. Something many Americans take for granted. There are some who live their privileged lives and constantly bash on the very country they live in. Every day many men and women who serve in our Armed Forces pay the ultimate sacrifice in hopes that the American dream stays alive. We Thank You.

Patriotism. The idea of showing pride for one's country. I love the United States. I appreciate the US Armed Forces so much that this blog post doesn't do it justice. Many others share the same patriotism that I have, and some have died fighting for this country that they have such a great  faith and loyalty to. We Thank You.

Sacrifice. Giving up something for something else (usually something better). 1,276,244 people are currently in the United States Armed Forces, sacrificing time with their families, sacrificing time for entertainment that others safe at home are enjoying. These men and women risk their lives each day they step out onto the battlefield in hopes that at the end of the day the red and white stripes are with the blue field of stars waving over these United States of America. The military personnel sacrifice their livelihoods and may just pay the ultimate sacrifice. It is for that reason that we pay tribute to those who died fighting for our freedom, and believed in the Liberty that binds all Americans together and wishing that it will be eternal.

The men and women of the armed forces who have died in combat while overseas defending our country deserve this day of remembrance  but why just today? Why not everyday? Most of the things you do daily are because of the freedoms given to us by the ones who created this nation, and to the people that have lost their lives so that ours are safe, we owe the greatest debt. From all of us in the United States of America, we thank all those who serve our country, and thank those who have perished in battle. God Bless You and God Bless America!

Not Me, Myself, and I, but Mom, Mama, and Indrani

Mom.
Spelled M-O-M
I think about how it was you out of all of them
that was chosen to be my mother.
She gave birth to both me and my brother.

She held me in her arms
when I first entered this world.
My brain thought of 2 things:
I CAN'T BREATHE and Who is this girl?

As the years went by
It's been a wonder with you
It's so great to say that you are my
Inspiration, Motivation, and my final Rendevous

Mama.
Spelled M-A-M-A
Without you I wouldn't have much to say.
You give me a comfort
Every single day
When I'm stuck in the dirt
and my life's a dull grey

You spread the love
You give everyone hope
Making sure life never too rough
Helping me reach that bottom rope

As the years went by
It's been a wonder with you
It's so great to say that you are my
Inspiration, Motivation, and my final Rendezvous

Mother
Spelled M-O-T-H-E-R
It's because of you, I have come so far
I love you regardless of the condition
Even when I have no more ignition
I will remember all the little things
That have helped me grow and fly with my wings.

I am older now
But before you, I will always bow
With a smile, I will bring you happiness
And make sure that your sons will keep you far from loneliness
You have done so much without asking for much
From pushing us to be our best
To packing our lunch
We appreciate you more than all the rest.

I love you mom. I always will.
Know you were my role model and are still
I love you mom. I always have.
From the days with tears, and those with laughs
I love you mom. I most definitely do.
It is with these words, I hope you see it's true.

As the years went by
It's been a wonder with you
It's so great to say that you are my
Inspiration, Motivation, and my final Rendezvous

Mother's Day

Mother's Day, the one day in a year when we make our mothers feel even more special than we do the other 364. Some make their mother breakfast, others shower her with gifts. For the past few years my brother and I, to show appreciation for the one we love the most, had done just that. We had given her trinkets that we bought from a store or made at school, made lunch or dinner, or took her around the neighborhood for a walk at dusk, watching the daylight slipping and appreciating nature at its best. This year was the 15th Mother's Day for me and 10th for my brother, so we wanted to do something different...

We know how service-oriented our mom is, and we wanted to express our grattitude with a mother's day gift that would put a smile on her face. My brother and I cleaned out his room of all games and toys that were in a very good condition, and boxed them up to donate them to charity. We can only imagine how the kids who receive these toys will feel! We love Giving. But most of all, we love YOU Mom. And please know that we always will.

Global Pay It Forward Day

This year my school, Heritage High School participated in the celebration of the global initiative: Pay It Forward.

So what is Pay It ForwardPay it Forward is a movement that which inspires random acts of kindness worldwide. The mission of Pay it Forward is to inspire people to pay it forward with acts of kindness and create the world’s largest ripple effect of good deeds. My magazine Philanthropy Kids strives to inspire and promote philanthropy in kids. So I thought it would be great to run this program in my school and teach kids about Philanthropy. Just think what an impact kids can make if they start to think selflessly and start to Pay It Forwardthrough good deeds that make a difference in the lives of people around them.

Back at the TEDxSMU conference in December 2012, I was introduced to this idea when the head of the Pay It Forward Foundation and Movement, Charley Johnson, spoke about how this concept had changed his life and the lives of people around him. This had got me thinking and I researched it some more. What the Pay It Forward Foundation does is provide members of society with bracelets that have the words "PAY IT FORWARD" etched in it serving as a constant reminder to pass on that good deed, that good turn, that good act, to someone else. I came to learn that Global Pay it Forward Day is April 25, 2013. April 25th is a very special day for me, it is my birthday. I thought to myself "I can give myself a big birthday gift by bringing Pay It Forward Day to my high school".

I spoke with the principal, Mr. Mark Mimms, about the idea and he loved it. He saw that it could really impact the student body and make them think more about "Service to Others". I was then directed to one of the Assistant Principals, Ms. Jennifer Redden, and we discussed the logistics. We planned on showing videos and presentations to the students explaining to them what Pay It Forward is and scheduled a "discussion period" for the students to talk about when their experience and ideas on this concept.

Finally it was April 25th, Global Pay It Forward Day. The day started with regular classes but instead of the usual schedule, the students got pulled into their "Coyote Den". There they watched a video on Pay It Forward and also my TED Talk on Philanthropy. Once people warmed up to this idea, the students talked about the times when they did acts of kindness to help others. We made plans to come back two weeks from now and do something to pay it forward and make a difference in the world.

The idea is really simple. Just be on the lookout and try to help people in whatever way possible. Make it a point to live everyday by performing small acts of kindness that can help anyone feel a little better. Go Ahead...be philanthropic...and Pay It Forward

I Am One

I've been living this life like i've been told
Trying to figure it out before i grow old
Nobody takes the advice that I feel is right
And before long the've drifted off to the night
People don't listen; all they do is ignore
Unless your words start with the words "Four Score"

I was told to dress like this
Something I don't mind, It doesn't make my list
But when I was told not to speak my mind
That's When I lost all hope for mankind

I was told to be like the rest
I could tell they were afraid of my best
So I sat alone thinking of what"
I don't know, but
I felt like I wanted to change
But not me for I wasn't at all strange
I wanted to make an impact
Something that would last and stay intact
So I set out to do what I do best
Speak my mind and let Fate do the rest

I did something that can be good
But I may have let bad come out from under its hood
I made people do
I made people think
They started to ask
"Why is the sky blue"
And "Why do I blink"
I changed the world but that was only the first task.

My goal was to rid the world of standards
So we aren't labeled with a tag on a lanyard
I wanted difference amongst the masses
So hopefully they would discover new types of gasses

The idea was to inpire hope
To look beyond physical features
and learn to cope
But it starts with teachers
Not from the school
But anywhere with a fool
Who thinks it straight to hate others
Instead of treating everyone like a brother.

A World of people with flaws
Brings out people's sharpest claws
Saying they're better
But can do no more than write a hurtful letter

But while my message may only be heard by a few
Know that the future depends solely on You

With the ability to make a choice
You must share your voice
To escape the binds of "the norm"
And learn to take your own form

All I have is one request:
Find what your are and be the best
For You know "who" you are
But with just that you may not go very far
It is up to you to start your own legacy
That starts with a simple letter: C

See what you are
See what you will become
See how you change the Earth
See how you will be among the stars
See that you will be one for which others drum
See that you have worth
See you are the one
See you have already won.
